Manning Wardle & Co. 'M' class 0-6-0 saddletank, PETERHEAD, No. 1378 of 1898. The locomotive is pictured in a cutting near to Haddenham in Buckinghamshire when at work on the construction of the Princes Risborough to Grendon Underwood section of the Great Western & Great Central joint line. This piece of the 'Alternative Route' was built by Louis P. Nott between 1901 and 1905. The two crew look very relaxed on the footplate of their engine, while a third man stands on the front buffer beam. Coupled to the front of the locomotive is a wagon loaded with sleepers. Note the clean sides of the cutting behind PETERHEAD.
