Hunslet Engine Co. 0-6-0 saddletank, NENE, No. 242 of 1881. The locomotive is seen amidst piles of spoil near Newbold Grounds in Northamptonshire when working on Contract No. 4 (Rugby to Woodford), built by T. Oliver & Son between 1894 and 1899. The two crew stand on the footplate while a third man (possibly a navvy) can be seen at the top of the excavated cutting wall behind the locomotive. Note the fine grade of the spoil in the foreground.
