Manning Wardle & Co. 'L' class 0-6-0 saddletank locomotive, J. R. WRIGHT, No. 1228 of 1895. The photograph was taken on 5th June 1897 in a cutting at Twyford in Buckinghamshire, when the locomotive was working on Contract No. 6 (Brackley to Quainton Road) built by Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle-upon-Tyne between 1894 and 1899. Seven men stand around the locomotive - two are the driver and fireman, four appear to be navvies, and the seventh is a Navvy Missionary (complete with white dog collar) who is standing on the right of the photograph.
