Six navvies posing with a dog at Charwelton, Northamptonshire, circa 1897. The photograph is a fine illustration of the clothes worn by such railwaymen at the end of the nineteenth century, and of the variety of age groups from which navvies were drawn. These men would be working on Contract No. 4 (Rugby to Woodford), built by T. Oliver & Son.
