An almost completed Belgrave and Birstall Station, Leicester, circa 1898. The 'island platform' design seen here could be found at stations along the length of the Great Central's London Extension. Designed by Alexander Ross, Chief Engineer of the then Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway, these stations became a characteristic feature of the new Railway. This section of the London Extension (Contract No.2, Leake to Aylestone) was built by Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton.
