A brick arch overbridge spans a cutting on the Great Western & Great Central Joint Line near Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, circa 1903. Visible through the arch is the unmistakable cab of a steam navvy, an improvised shelter made from wood and corrugated metal. Despite the invaluable use of these powerful new machines, this photograph proves railway construction was still dependent on large sums of men working with pick and shovel.
