Four navvies pose for Newton's camera beside a steam excavator at a limestone rock cutting, circa 1897. The photograph is a good opportunity to see a steam navvy without the improvised cab of wood and corrugated metal which the contractors often installed to protect both the machine and their men. Although it is known that these navvies are at work on Contract No.1 (Annesley to Leake built by Logan & Hemingway), the precise location for the photograph has not been established. .
